Down the ravine from Westbrook Estate, the Whitemud Creek valley is between seasons. Rainbow Valley Campground closed for the year on October 11. Snow Valley, a short distance along the same valley floor, still says "Closed for the Season" and hasn't announced an opening day. The valley looks quiet. Much of what decides how this winter goes for a household near the ravine happens over the next few weeks, though, and the cheapest season-pass prices end before the first chair turns.
The Campground Shut First, and Its Lot Stays in Use
Rainbow Valley's homepage has switched to its off-season message: bookings are closed, with a cheerful "Have a great winter!" and "See you in 2027." The campground's own page still carries a notice about Whitemud Freeway bridge construction near the site, marked "Until 2027." The City's October 2026 update reports that Stage 2 construction is complete, with landscaping and site restoration continuing into 2027.
The campground keeps a winter job, too. On busy days, Snow Valley sends overflow parking to the campground lot once its main lot fills. The hill warns that parking is limited, a spot isn't guaranteed, and carpooling or drop-offs are encouraged. So the campground's summer gravel becomes ski-day parking. For families who live near the ravine, being dropped off from the neighbourhood is one of the plainest perks of living this close.
The Ski Hill Has Hours, Not a Date
Snow Valley sits in Whitemud Park, just off the Whitemud Freeway on 119 Street. Its hours and conditions page already lists the 2026-27 regular winter schedule. Buildings open by 9:00 a.m. and lifts start at 9:30 a.m. Weekday operation runs to 9:00 p.m. and weekends close at 5:00 p.m. Those late weekday hours matter more than the weekend ones here. On a weeknight, a couple of runs after dinner is a short trip, not a planned outing.
There's still no opening date. SnowSeekers' 2026-27 opening-date roundup puts Snow Valley at November 16, 2026, and labels that date an estimate, not something the resort has confirmed. The terrain park page says much the same about features: the list will go up once they're set. The discount deadline is already fixed on the calendar.
The Deadline Comes Before the Snow
The season-pass window that matters now is printed on Snow Valley's season pass page as "10% OFF, Sept 16 to Oct 31." On publication day, nine days are left in it.
| Pass category | Through October 31 | Standard rate | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 to 6 years | $225 | $250 | $25 |
| 7 to 12 years | $306 | $340 | $34 |
| 13 to 64 years | $405 | $450 | $45 |
| 65+ years | $135 | $150 | $15 |
| Weekday, Monday to Friday | $256.50 | $285 | $28.50 |
| Family | $999 | $1,110 | $111 |
Passes for children 3 and under are $50 in both columns. The family pass shows the biggest dollar gap. It also links to a second benefit. Pass holders get 25% off multi-week lessons, and lesson sales opened September 16, according to the hill's August pass-sale announcement. For a household with young skiers, the pass and the lesson discount make one decision, and the cheaper version of it ends with October.
What's New at the Ticket Window
Snow Valley's lift ticket page marks two changes as "NEW this season." Servus Community Fridays drop to $20, and Last 2 Hour tickets are now sold on weekends. Put those next to the hours above and they suit a neighbourhood a few minutes from the base. A $20 Friday or a late-afternoon weekend ticket pays off most for people who can get to the hill and back without making a day of it.
Snow Valley also launched a new webstore this fall. Its New Webstore FAQ says buyers need a new customer account and that cards from previous seasons must be replaced, with the first replacement card during the transition free. After that, the lift ticket page says a card bought under your profile reloads automatically with each online purchase, and later replacements cost $5. Each card belongs to one person's profile and can't be shared or transferred within a family. The hill may also ask for government-issued ID to confirm who bought a ticket, as a check against third-party resale. Sorting out a profile for each family member before opening weekend saves time at the counter.
The Walk Down Got Easier This Year
Getting to the valley on foot changed this summer. In its October 2026 update, the City says Stage 2 of the Terwillegar Drive project is complete. That includes the new Rainbow Valley and 142 Street pedestrian and cyclist bridges and shared-path upgrades between 122 and 142 Streets. Both bridges opened in July 2026. A westbound single-lane closure on 122 Street for embankment repairs is scheduled to last until late October. The full route is covered in our earlier post on the ravine walk from Westbrook Estate and its new bridge.
Once snow is down, that path also leads to the City's sledding. Whitemud Park North, at 13204 Fox Drive NW, is on the City's list of designated toboggan hills, and the City asks sledders to check its live status before heading out. Whitemud Park isn't on the City's lists of regularly groomed cross-country ski locations or outdoor rinks, so for those you'll be driving elsewhere. The City's outdoor ice directory names river valley spots such as Rundle, Victoria and Sir Wilfrid Laurier parks.
For Derrick Golf & Winter Club members, winter at the club looks a little different now. The club's curling page says curling "will no longer be offered," and its 2026 recreation guide lists an outdoor skating rink among member recreation facilities.
Before the Snow, Week by Week
The weeks before the lifts open are full nearby. Here they are in the order they begin, starting from publication day:
- Saturday, October 24, 10 a.m. to noon. The Derrick's Playroom Mini Halloween Party, $20 per child, for club members.
- October 24 and 31, 1 to 3 p.m. Trick or Tea, a Halloween afternoon tea at Johnson's Cafe in Fort Edmonton Park.
- Through October 31. DARK at Fort Edmonton Park. This year it adds a new haunt called Camp Ski '83. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. and the haunts run 7 to 11 p.m.
- October 31. Last day of Snow Valley's 10% season-pass window.
- Weekends through April 25, 2027, noon to 4 p.m. Fort Edmonton Park's Indigenous Peoples Experience stays open. The park's other buildings are closed for the fall and winter.
- Around November 16, unconfirmed. SnowSeekers' estimated Snow Valley opening. Snow Valley's conditions page will have the official date.
- November 27 to December 20. The Edmonton Christmas Market returns to Fort Edmonton Park at 7000 143 Street NW, with artisan shopping, seasonal food and drink, entertainment and family activities.
For a coffee on any of these days, there's something new close by. Deville Coffee held its grand opening at Southgate Centre, 5015 111th Street NW, on September 26, Daily Hive reported. It serves coffee, pastries, sandwiches and other snacks. If the hill opens mid-November, the next few weeks leave time for a pass, a lesson booking, a Saturday at the Fort and a coffee at Southgate before the first ski day.
Living above the Whitemud Creek ravine shapes a whole year: a summer of campground evenings, a winter that starts a short walk down the valley. At Rimrock Real Estate, we think about that closeness when we help families plan, build or sell homes in Westbrook Estate, and we're glad to talk through what it means for yours.
